A 54-year-old Proston truck driver cut free from the crushed cabin of his semi-trailer near Merlwood this morning has died in hospital.

A police spokesman said the Forensic Crash Unit was investigating the crash, which occurred about 9:40am near the intersection of the Murgon-Gayndah Road and Bicks Road.

The fully loaded grain truck appeared to have left the road and hit a tree as it was travelling south along Murgon-Gayndah Road.

It was found about 50m off the road in a paddock.

The driver was trapped in the cabin for about 50 minutes and was freed by firefighters using specialist equipment at 10:27am.

The RACQ CareFlight helicopter flew the injured man to Nambour Hospital with serious leg and pelvis injuries.
