Holly Ferling … fast bowlers can be more susceptible to back injuries

July 17, 2014

A back injury has ruled out Kingaroy’s Holly Ferling from selection for the Southern Stars’ upcoming matches against Pakistan.

The Cricket Australia Women’s National Selection Panel announced the teams today.

They will play four One Day Internationals and four T20 Internationals in Brisbane and the Gold Coast from August 21.

The only change to the squad that claimed victory at the ICC World T20 in Bangladesh in April is the drafting of South Australian seamer Megan Schutt, who will replace the injured Ferling.

Ferling was diagnosed earlier this year with a stress fracture in her lower back.

CA Chief Medical Officer Justin Paoloni said Ferling had scans after her return to Australia from the Bangladesh series.

“She has experienced ongoing lower back pain and her age, developing bones and the fact that she’s a fast bowler are all contributing factors,” he said.

“Holly is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation and will not be available for selection for the series against Pakistan.

“We are gearing her rehabilitation towards being available for selection later this year.”
