Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington on the Haly Street crossing … an upgrade is in the pipeline

April 8, 2014

An intersection and pedestrian crossing which have been identified by local police as one of the most dangerous in Kingaroy looks set to have an upgrade to improve safety.

Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, from Kingaroy Police, told southburnett.com.au in February that the corner of Glendon and Haly streets was difficult because there was traffic turning across traffic, poor visibility and the camber of the road.

“Drivers turning right out of Glendon Street are looking left and then suddenly they are on the pedestrian crossing,” he said.

There have been a number of incidents at the crossing, including in December when a 30-year-old Kingaroy woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after she was knocked down. A 63-year-old man was later charged with driving without due care and attention.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said today that after listening to community concerns, she had gone to the Department requesting a more thorough safety audit and review of the pedestrian crossing’s safety.

“Following the accident on the crossing in December last year, and hearing several other near-miss stories, I decided something needed to be done,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“I was pleased to meet with the TMR Wide Bay Burnett Regional Director this month and discuss several improvements which will be made including:

  • Improving lighting at the crossing
  • Replacing the existing Give Way sign with a Stop Sign on George Street
  • Re-marking of the existing lines on the road
  • Applying new road marking to alert motorists to the upcoming crossing
  • Extending the out-stand on the Glendon Street side of the intersection to improve sight lines

“This is a great outcome which will improve safety for motorists and pedestrians around the Haly Street pedestrian crossing and I’m glad that I was able assist the community to have their concerns addressed,” Deb said.

The works are currently being scoped and a timeframe will be announced at a later date.
