A rumour that Toowoomba Regional Council will be building a Visitor Information Centre on a vacant block land in the heart of Yarraman has been denied by a council spokesperson.
The land in question is located on the corner of the New England Highway (Margaret Street) and the D’Aguilar Highway (Toomey Street).
It has been vacant for many years following the destruction of a hotel on the site by fire in the 1990s.
The Council spokesperson said some Yarraman residents have actively campaigned over a long period of time for Council to purchase the block of land and construct a Visitor Information Centre.
“Rosalie Shire Council looked at this proposition some years ago and considered the cost of land purchase and construction to be prohibitive,” the spokesperson said.
“Other issues were raised about the suitability of the location for a Visitor Information Centre given the need for recreational vehicles to park on or near the junction of two major highways.
“There are currently fully accredited Visitor Information Centres at Blackbutt (15km east), Nanango (15km west), and Hampton (86km south).
“Yarraman has operated a non-accredited Visitor Information Centre for a number of years in a number of different locations. More recently, this has operated from Heritage House in Millar Street.
“The Council library also distributes visitor information.”
