February 6, 2014

Members of Kumbia QCWA held their first meeting for 2014 on Tuesday, February 4 and already the year to come is looking like it will be a busy one.

Our first function is to support the Kumbia School Centenary celebrations by holding a stall to provide dessert-style food.

In this International Year of Family Farming we aim to support Australian family farmers by using fruit salad, pie apples, custard and cream – all made in Australia.

Chocolate frogs in jelly ponds will also be available for the little ones.

On March 22 the branch will celebrate its 90th birthday, and members are looking forward to renewing friendships with past members.

It will also be an opportunity to acknowledge the support given to the branch through a grant received from the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund which has enabled us to build a new access ramp and renovate our kitchen.

In the meantime we are grateful to other clubs such as the Kingaroy Lions, South Burnett Lodge, Kingaroy RSL, Senior Citizens, Hospital Auxiliary, Ulysses and others who are supporting us by selling tickets in an art union to raise funds to purchase a bladder scanner for the Kingaroy Base Hospital.

We are selling tickets in the Mall most Thursdays and welcome readers’ support.

We are trying to make this a whole of community effort because you never know who will be the one to benefit from this equipment.

Our International Officer Catherine Woodham has prepared a striking design to submit to State for the 2015 study of the English Midlands.

Our current country of interest is Vietnam, and Catherine will be encouraging input from our local school students in the ANZ children’s colouring and poster competitions.

Following on the success of a Kumbia student who received a substantial cash first prize at State judging last year, we are hoping the students will all be keen to have a go this year.

At our craft day on February 12 we will assemble our many poppies to be sent off as part of the commemoration of 100 years since the first Anzac Day.

On May 24 we are planning a workshop to sew chenille bags.

So keep a lookout for details of materials needed (or kit prices) and plan to come and make your very own bag.

The QCWA empowers and inspires women through friendship, education, service and advocacy.

The Kumbia branch meets at 10:00am on the first Tuesday of the month to attend to the business of the branch, and on the second Wednesday to do craft.

We are always happy to welcome visitors and/or prospective new members!
