The Australia Day long weekend was a big weekend for bowlers, with many getting some early practice for the club championships due to start in a couple of weeks.

Here’s a run-down of what happened around the region:

In Yarraman:

Yarraman went bowling on Australia Day with a pairs tournament, and some high scoring games were recorded.

Some results worth a mention:

  • Horst Meyer paired with Margaret Willoughby to down Andy Box and Sandra Currell 24-18
  • Kerry Knowles and Di Currell defeated Merv Fitch and Daphne Stewart 26-17
  • Leo Robinson and Robyn Diercke defeated Chris Macleod and Todd Currell 29-8

And there’ll be social bowls tomorrow – club select – with a 12:30pm start time.

The ladies played their first games for 2014 on Wednesday of last week. There was a good roll-up and some very close scores.

Just check these out:

  • Lorri Holmes and Alison Anderson def Jim LeCoq and Kay Dugdell 16-15
  • Neil Currell and John Beattie def Horst Meyer and Di Currell 19-18
  • Kev Profke and Robyn Diercke drew with Brian Dugdell and Glenda Wolski 17-all

The ladies had another good day on Wednesday of this week with one game of 18 ends – three points for a win and two points for each end won.

  • The winners on a countback were Helene Johnson and Glenda Wolski, who defeated Horst Meyer and Alison Anderson 19-12 – 11 ends to 7.
  • Runners up were John Beattie and Di Currell, who defeated Jim LeCocq and Robyn Diercke 13-17 – 11 ends to 7

Another game in the picture was Merv Fitch, Daphne Stewart and Leo Robinson who defeated Neil Currell, Doreen Fitch and Yvonne Schultz 14-13 – 10 ends to 8.

And a reminder: the ladies club will be holding their AGM next Wednesday at 9:00am.

In Kingaroy:

On Australia Day:

  • Bes Thorp, Des Richards and David Barwick 19 def Dave Woods, Glad Slatter and Bruce Johnstone 14
  • Peg Robinson, Fred Keding and Mal McLeod 21 def Rob Johnson, Peter Nielsen and Paul Marychurch 13
  • Marj Moore, Val Jeppersen and Kev Raffin 18 def Brigitte Kung, Ben Pratap and Beryl Woods 14

And on the public holiday Monday:

  • Winners: Danny Holligan and Bronwyn Grant – 2 Wins +24.
  • Runners up: Charmaine MacLeod and Mal MacLeod – 2 Wins +19.

The Jackpot was won too.

It was shared by Peter Neilsen, Eris Vale, Errol Dionysius and Trevor Turner.

In Wondai:

Wondai celebrated our national day with their Men’s Pairs Australia Day Carnival

  • Winners: G Trevor and R Fraham – 3 wins +33
  • Runners up: R Marshall and A Barsby – 3 wins +30

And in the Last Round trophy – W Brocklebank and Wayne +7.

There was also a big day there last Sunday with a Mixed Fours competition over three rounds:

  • Winners: J Rook, G Allen, R Currie and B Kunde – 3 wins +36
  • Runners up: D Holligan, B Grant, C Kratzman and R Maclaren – 2 ½ wins + 36

And in the Last Round trophy – M Kay, N Kay, T Learoyd and B Cecil 14.

In Kilcoy:

There’s always plenty happening there!

Last Tuesday in Jackpot bowls – a great day – 24 players took part in the competition, and the jackpot went off with Leigh Irwin, Liz Frawley and Terry Pratten the winners.

Jackpot bowls is on again this coming Tuesday if you want to try your luck. Names in by 9:00am for a 9:30am start.

Star of the Green this week was Ernie Herbert, who defeated Brett Kelly. Next week he will play Liz Frawley.

There were four games of Triples this week too:

  • Terry Pratten, Liz Frawley and Leigh Irwin defeated Darrell Coffee, Bert Christie and Pauline Lawson 28-10
  • Kelly Charters Sharon Walker and Noel Lanes defeated Brett Kelly, Ernie Herbert & Jeff Welden 23-13
  • Phyllis Coffee. Dave Scott and Jenny Edwards defeated Fay, Margaret Worrall and Dennis Thomson 22-20
  • Flora Kelly. John Worrall and Bill Edwards defeated Col Ferguson, Kathy Hill and Nelly Herbert 22-15

PS: Today is the return match against the Golf Club. Names in by 2:00pm for a 2:30pm start.

In Tansey:

Tansey is getting 2014 off on the right note

Their next night bowls is set down for Friday 7th February.

There’ll be a BBQ at 6:00pm followed by bowls at 7:00pm.

  • Next Saturday – Rotational Triples, with Yarraman playing Nanango at Nanango
  • Sunday 16th – Return match Rotational Triples: Yarraman versus Nanango at Yarraman
  • Thursday 20th – Pub Day at Yarraman, with an 11:30am start
  • Saturday 22nd – Yarraman Mens BC AGM at 9:00am
  • Sunday 23rd – Kingaroy Men’s Presidents Day
