The remains of burned out grass trees near Coomba Falls

January 27, 2014

Tourists have been blamed for a fire that burned through bushland in the Maidenwell area on Friday.

A local resident spotted smoke coming from near the popular Coomba Falls waterhole and called the Maidenwell fire shed.

Rural firefighters quickly brought the fire under control but took some time to finally extinguish it as grass trees were burning.

The South Burnett Regional Council’s new walkway was not damaged.

Meanwhile, smoke from a fire burning on Ballin Road at Hodgeleigh slowed traffic on the D’Aguilar Highway yesterday afternoon.

The fire burned out an area on the northern side of the highway near the Barker Creek flats.

SES volunteers helped to control traffic until the highway was safe.
