If you have a family history of Type 2 Diabetes, carry some extra weight around your waist or are not as active as you used to be, you could be at increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

An estimated 280 people are diagnosed with diabetes in Australia each day, with 80 to 90 per cent of these being Type 2 Diabetes.

In the South Burnett, two out of three adults (67.9 per cent) are carrying extra weight but only one out of every two people (46.1 per cent) does enough physical activity every day.

To help South Burnett residents make simple, cost effective changes to the way they eat and move every day RHealth has developed an exciting, hands-on program called “The Diabetes Prevention Program”.

It will be run over four weeks in Kingaroy, Murgon and Nanango.

Participants will learn to cook healthy and inexpensive options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

During the sessions participants will be involved in the preparation and pick up useful tips for modifying recipes, understanding food labels and making their shopping dollar go further.

The program will also provide participants with an opportunity to learn simple and effective ways to become active every day and will challenge them over the four weeks to increase their incidental activity.

It is hoped that the people attending will be armed with the knowledge and tools to make long-lasting changes to reduce their risk of Type 2 Diabetes into the future.

The program is being delivered free to participants.

Funding has been provided through Darling Downs South West Queensland Medicare Local and the Federal Department of Health under the Rural Primary Health Services program.

Places are limited.
