A committee consisting of representatives from the South Burnett Regional Council, local RSL sub-branches and schools are putting together a proposal to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landing with a special book honouring local World War I veterans.

The group aims to apply for funding under the Federal Government’s “Centenary of Anzac” grants program to publish a book of stories in 2015 put together by Year 9 students from throughout the South Burnett.

Each student would write a short “biography” of a local World War I digger.

The aim is to put faces and stories behind the names on the Honour Rolls throughout the region.

Council Communities portfolio spokesperson Cr Ros Heit said a meeting to progress the project occurred on Monday afternoon.

She said the students could gather the information for their reports by interviewing local families and gathering information from the Australian War Memorial.

“Any local family who has connections to a World War I digger are also invited to contact me on 0477-010-743,” Cr Heit said.
