Firefighters successfully prevented a blaze from spreading to adjoining buildings but could not save a home in Beattie Street at Cherbourg this afternoon.

An Emergency Services spokesperson said the lowset timber house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at 3:45pm.

No occupants of the building were injured but a neighbour was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Fire units from Murgon and Wondai responded to the emergency.

They had the fire under control by 4:20pm but the building was substantially damaged and will probably have to be demolished.
