There were quite a few anxious eyes on the weather all round the South Burnett last week.

Yarraman had over 40mm of rain over Friday and Saturday morning. The Yarraman swimming carnival was on next door, and they could have transferred some of their short course events to the bowling green.

However the Yarraman green-keeper and his staff did a fantastic job and the Rosalie Fours carnival got under way just after lunch.

In horse racing on a wet track you favour the grey. don’t you?

Well, there were 64 greys at Yarraman – maybe a few not-so-greys – and amongst them there were quite a few regular visitors with a few years under their belt

Players came from Toowoomba, Bribie Island, Kallangur (who sent two teams) and Mitchell. And of course the South Burnett Clubs were there in force too.

The Calcutta was interesting – some plunges went astray – and there were some surprises in the Calcutta prize money.

Esk news:

The weather upset Esk’s plans last weekend, with rain washing out their annual Chairman versus President’s Day.

This contest is always a hot one and bragging rights are most important – so the match has been postponed to a date yet to be fixed. But with the green being closed for annual maintenance. there’s a bit of a fiddle going on with the dates.

Present thoughts are that it might be held following the AGM, which might throw the new office-bearers into the hot seat (!)

However the Blue Jewl’s Day last Tuesday was a very festive occasion, with more than thirty players on the green and visitors from Woombye and Woodford.

Highest Score went to Jeff Welden, Bert Christie and Wendy Smith, who defeated Terry Pratten, Col Ferguson and Dorothy Kranenbring 16.

Runners-up were the lowest winning score: Ernie Herbert, Beryl Ferguson and Jenny Edwards on 17 defeated Millie (Woombye), John Worrall and Pam Taylor 9.

Big day today for bowlers, with bowls starting at 2:30pm, followed by Christmas Dinner and presentations at 6:00pm

Next Tuesday is the last social play for the year.

It will also be Jackpot Day with the trophy standing at a very nice $101.

Ernie Herbert and Sharon Walker will also play off their Star of the Green match.

Kingaroy’s PR man Geoff Clutterbuck is now off for an extended holiday – and wow! I wouldn’t mind one of those myself.

But Happy Holiday, Geoff. Club Captain Dave Barwick will be taking over in your absence.

And finally, a little bit more news from Esk:

The club is busy building up frequent travel points with Pub Days at Toogoolawah. Laidley and RAAF Amberley.

They’re also off to Crows Nest today where champion bowler Kelvin Kerkow is visiting.

Sunday of next week is their last day of bowls, with a Combined Christmas Break-up and Trophy Presentation.

To start proceedings there’ll be a sponsored trophy game. Sponsors John and Noela Blank will join with Stitt and St George Funerals, and teams will be selected on the day.

Esk are also ahead of some clubs – their club championship draw for next year is on the notice board already

Well, that’s it for another week.

Most clubs are taking the opportunity of the Festive Season break to work on their greens (I know Yarraman’s green-keeper will start maintenance on Monday).

Still, some clubs are finishing off the season with a big one.

The Mixed Fours are on at Proston today, and a reminder that next Sunday is Goomeri Patron and Patroness Day. This will be a Mixed Fours event with two games 18 ends. Want to be part of the excitement yourself?? Ring Bevan or Hazel Sippel on (07) 4168-4212.
