The South Burnett Regional Council is conducting a survey of local sporting organisations to assess the “health” of sporting clubs in the region.

Sport and Recreation spokesman Cr Barry Green said council wanted to assess where they may need support.

“The sports survey is intended to do this,” he said.

“It is important that we do not base any decisions on personal opinions. The questionnaire will go out to the major sporting organisations in the region so we can get some facts and figures.

“In 2012 the Australian Sports Commission did a study of children between the ages of five and 13 and they found 20 per cent of this age group can’t make up their mind about playing sport. This group was identified as needing encouragement to play sport.

“We are keen to help support the clubs in the region who are doing a great job at encouraging people to become involved in sport.”

The survey is being facilitated through the Burnett Inland Economic Development Organisation’s Sport and Recreation Project.

“Council has been working with Nicole O’Brien from BIEDO and we thank Nicole and BIEDO for their involvement,” Cr Green said.

Ms O’Brien said she was looking forward to seeing the results of the survey.

“It will assist both Council and BIEDO’s Sport and Recreation project in ascertaining the current health of our sporting clubs. This will then assist us and our local sports clubs in accessing funds and support for the future,” she said.

“The survey has been sent to all known sports organisations in the region. If someone hasn’t received their copy, I would urge them to please get in touch with me or visit BIEDO’s website.”
