Two fire crews were called to the Parkside sawmill in the Wondai Industrial Estate on Friday morning after a fire broke out in a 5m bin of sawdust.

Firefighters were called about 5:20am to North Street.

They had to wear breathing apparatus to fight the fire, which was contained to the large bin.

An Emergency Services spokesman said sawdust fires can be particularly hard to fight as when one layer is put out, the fire can still be smouldering at lower levels.

The fire was finally extinguished by 8:00am.

Spontaneous combustion is believed to have been the cause.
