Police were called to direct traffic on the Bunya Highway near Memerambi this morning because of smoke from a grass fire near Grants Road.

Eight urban and rural fire crews were called to the scene at 10:20am.

An Emergency Services spokesman said that by 11:30am, half of the fire area had been “blacked out” and the fire was contained and under control.

Emergency services personnel are urging South Burnett residents to take extreme care to avoid fires in the current windy conditions.

UPDATE: SES volunteers relieved police from traffic control duties and remained on scene until fire crews left the area.
