A man has died and another airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a crash during a car rally near Imbil on Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said the injured man was a 45-year-old from Bunya, near Ferny Hills, who was the driver of the vehicle; the navigator / co-pilot of the vehicle, aged 40, from Middle Park in Brisbane, died at the scene.

They were competing in Stage 14 of the International Rally Of Queensland.

An RACQ CareFlight Helicopter spokesman said the injured man suffered multi-trauma injuries and was trapped in the vehicle for some time.

The incident apparently occurred on a fast section of the course when the car left the road and slid down a steep embankment.

Emergency services personnel freed the man and a road ambulance then transported him to the helicopter which landed nearby.

The RACQ CareFlight’s doctor and flight paramedic stabilised him before he was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and the International Rally of Queensland issued a joint statement this evening confirming the crash.

“CAMS and the International Rally of Queensland are extremely saddened by the loss of a valued member of the motor sport community. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to family and friends of both members at this difficult time,” a spokesman said.

Investigators from the Police Forensic Crash unit are investigating.
