Once again, Saturday’s match between Wests and Gunners produced a close game and Gunners earned every bit of their 2-0 win over an ever-improving Wests outfit.

Gunners put pressure on Wests early on but the Wests’ defence was up to the job.

In the 17th minute of the game Brendan McCarron (who incidentally played a full Second Division game) got behind the Wests’ defence to cross to Ryan Mooney, who then drilled the ball into the back of the net.

Just before halftime it was Mooney, again, who extended Gunners’ lead cleverly, jumping on to a mistake by the Wests defence.

Wests came out in the second half very determined to make amends.

There was a great battle in the midfield between Harry Sterling and Peter Green, with neither giving an inch.

Both sides had opportunities to score but both defences held tight.

Best for Gunners were Ryan Mooney, Zac Strauss, and Peter Green while Russ Hutfield, Harry Sterling and Skip Litzow had good games for Wests.

In the Women’s match, Wests went ahead through a fine individual run from Jacqui Trace who finished clinically, not long after Ashleigh Tessmann replied for Gunnettes.

The second half was closer and Wests – who took the field with only nine players – were tiring.

Midway through the second half it was once again Jacqui Trace that took the opportunity to shoot at an open goal to make it 2-1 to Wests.

In Second Division, Gunners won 3-0, with the highlight being two goals scored from the league’s youngest player Callum Cook.

Gunners took the lead in the 27th minute through Jason Tessmann.

Wests had their chances, but poor finishing let them down.

The win is a step forward for Gunners Seconds, who are improving each week.
