A fire investigation unit has been called in to determine the cause of a fire which destroyed a house in Blackbutt in the early hours of this morning.

An off-duty police officer noticed smoke and notified the fire brigade about 2:08am.

An Emergency Services spokesman said two urban and two rural units attended but found the building, in Douglas Street, well alight on arrival.

Firefighters had to don breathing apparatus while trying to extinguish the blaze.

They were on the site until about 4:20am, dampening down and conducting a thorough search of the site to determine all occupants were accounted for.

This is the second house fire that has occurred in Douglas Street this year.

In April, fire badly damaged a house about 1:25am on April 23.  At the time, police said they were treating that blaze as suspicious.

UPDATE June 20:  An Emergency Services spokesman said the cause of the fire was undetermined however the matter had been passed over to police for further investigations.
