Queensland: Beautiful one day, raining the next … a drizzly, overcast day put a chill on the outside activities at the Queensland Week celebrations at Blackbutt at the weekend, but inside the Memorial Hall, the music was pumping.
The Windy City Jazzmen provided a musical backdrop for local residents who gathered in the hall on Sunday to enjoy hot soup, damper and a warming lunch and peruse artwork by children from the Benarkin and Blackbutt state schools.
The day’s activities culminated in the presentation of “Valuing Community Awards”, presented by South Burnett Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell.
Ralph Tennant, a long-time volunteer with the Taromeo Rural Fire Brigade, was presented with an award in appreciation on his “outstanding volunteer services” to the community.
Ralph thanked the Taromeo Rural Fire Brigade for nominating him for the award and “for putting up with me”. He also thanked his wife for washing his dirty overalls after a fire, and for putting up with him getting up at 2:00am when called to an emergency.
The Timbertown Woodworking Group Inc was presented with an award for “actively enhancing community engagement”.
Group president Bob Robey thanked his members for always being ready to help the community whenever called upon.
Deputy Mayor Campbell thanked Friends of Cultcha for organising the Queensland Week celebration, and in particular, Laraine Aniftos for her hard work.
Queensland Week celebrates Queensland’s official separation from NSW. On June 6, 1859, Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent confirming Queensland’s status as an independent colony.
