Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-Branch President Don Davey with the remains of a rifle, probably Japanese, recovered from the Kokoda Trail

April 12, 2013

The Kingaroy Heritage Museum in Haly Street has unveiled a new exhibition of items of military interest timed to coincide with Anzac Day.

The display is a collaborative effort with the Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL sub-branch.

Items include two mini-dioramas featuring a Churchill tank and an armed personnel carrier.

A highlight is two World War II rifle barrels recovered in recent years from the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea.

Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL sub-branch president Don Davey said the exact identification of the weapons had not yet been proven but they were believed to be Japanese and were possible sniper rifles.

The display also includes historic photos and other items usually stored at the sub-branch headquarters at the Kingaroy RSL Club.

Mr Davey said the display was an opportunity to show the items to people who would not normally get to see them, and to help keep the memories going.

The display will run throughout April.

The museum plans another display, this time with from the Vietnam era, during August; and another during November to co-incide with Remembrance Day.

Entry into the Kingaroy Heritage Museum is free, and it is open daily.
