Toowoomba Regional Council sport and recreation officers have assisted sports clubs in the shire gain more than $3 million of external grant money over the past two years.
Almost $4.5 million worth of projects have been funded as a result of assistance from the three officers – Paul Knight, Anna Barrett and Dominic Doyle – who have worked with sport and recreation organisations to secure funding.
Of that amount, the Toowoomba Regional Council has contributed $703,265 and the successful clubs have chipped in $898,985.
The three officers are jointly funded by the State Government and the TRC to assist clubs across the region become more self-sustaining.
Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the region’s sport and recreation community would ultimately be much more resilient due to the injection of funding.
“These clubs have been empowered by our sport and rec officers. These officers help them build capacity within their organisations by making them aware of and grasping funding opportunities,” Cr McDonald said.
“It is a credit to these officers and the sporting organisations involved that they have secured this funding.
“Sport and rec bodies generally rely on volunteers so any help they can get from us is much appreciated.”
The next round of Council’s Sport and Recreation Community Grants will open in August 2013.
Sporting groups in Yarraman and Cooyar who would like more information should contact the TRC on 13-18-72 or visit their website.
