The Murgon community paused for a moment on Wednesday night to farewell two much-loved local residents who are retiring to the Gold Coast.
But Irma and Frank Close have issued a warning … if they don’t like it, they’ll be coming back quick smart!
The farewell was hosted by St Joseph’s Catholic Parish.
The couple has worked hard for the South Burnett community, with Irma, in particular, recognised for her work with CRISIS, the committee that raises funds for the Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service (AGL Action Helicopter).
AGL Action chief pilot Brent Chamberlain was on hand to present Irma with a framed photograph as a thank you gift for her years of fundraising.
Several years ago it was estimated Irma was responsible for more than $100,000 worth of donations to the service.
Leo Geraghty, from the Murgon Business and Development Association, presented the couple with a book of clippings from “Murgon Moments” with highlights of their lives over the past few years.
South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann also presented a framed “thank you” letter from the South Burnett Regional Council.
“We were the lucky ones when Frank and Irma decided to make their home in this great town of Murgon,” Mayor Kratzmann said.
“Congratulations and thank you for everything that you have done.”
Irma confessed she was sad to be leaving Murgon.
“I’m going to miss you all,” she said.
“Thank you to Wayne and the South Burnett shire and the other councils for their support of the helicopter rescue service over the past 23 years.
“It started when our wonderful mayor Bill Roberts was at Murgon Shire and each of the other councillors supported us 100 per cent.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with you all.”
