Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington is urging South Burnett residents to slow down and drive safely over the Easter break.

“Every death on our roads is one too many,” she said.

She said the 2013 road toll was sitting at almost one death a day – 16 above last year.

“It’s time for drivers to take check and to slow down. Getting somewhere 10 minutes late is far better than not getting there at all,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“Easter is the time for loved ones to get together and enjoy the long weekend with friends and family, not be mourning the loss of a loved one.”

The State Government recently launched the “Better Slow Down” ad campaign, which is running in the lead-up to the Easter school holidays with an ad so graphic it can only be shown during off-peak times and after 8:30pm.

Mrs Frecklington said the road toll was already at a stage where there was no alternative but to confront people with the dangers of speeding.

“Speeding is one of the biggest killers on Queensland roads with speed contributing to one in every five fatal road crashes in Queensland,” she said.

“The consequences of speeding are tragic, real and long-lasting. This graphic campaign aims to remind reckless drivers of this.

“I beg drivers to wear a seatbelt, focus on the road and to slow down.

“Let’s make sure everyone makes it home to enjoy the Easter festivities.”
