The South Burnett Regional Council reported today that the recently restored Taromeo Cemetery stood tall and steady during the Australia Day weekend floods.
Local Councillor Debra Palmer had been concerned a similar flood to January 2011 may have taken its toll on the cemetery but she says no damage was done this time around.
“It has been a long journey from the January 2011 floods to restore this important piece of history,” she said.
“We are happy to report that the cemetery withstood water flowing down Taromeo Creek. It’s reassuring to know that it is undamaged and will continue to give insight into the lives of early settlers in the region.”
The scheduled celebration of the restoration work completed last year will be held on Saturday, February 23, from 3:00pm.
“There is some debris surrounding the cemetery that will have to be cleared before the Taromeo Cemetery Celebration,” SBRC General Manager of Communities Eleanor Sharpe said.
The celebration will include a Blessing followed by afternoon tea.
“The celebration is a chance to come together as a community. The day will now hold even more significance given the recent disaster so Council encourages everyone to come and be part of the afternoon activities,” Cr Palmer said
