The Nanango & District Netball Association is looking forward to a new inter-town competition with Kingaroy this year.
The association held the first of its three sign-on days for the 2013 season at its Nanango-Brooklands Road netball courts on Friday afternoon.
Association Secretary Sheryl Wolski said the Nanango and Kingaroy netball clubs plan to hold regular inter-club competitions in 2013.
“It’s good for netball and it’s good for the kids,” Sheryl said.
The association has around 120 players, ranging in age from five years to seniors.
Sheryl said Kingaroy has a similar number of players.
Both clubs cater for four grades: Midgets (5-8 years), Juniors (9-11 years), Cadets (12-15 years) and Seniors (16 years and over).
Last year the Nanango club held all its competitions internally, but this year they’ll be competing against Kingaroy in the Midgets, Juniors and Cadets grades to help strengthen the players and the sport as a whole.
Nanango had tried to run its own Senior competition in 2012 but had insufficient numbers in that grade to run it effectively, Sheryl said.
So this year Nanango Seniors will support the Kingaroy Seniors teams.
Two further sign-on days will be held at 4:30pm on the next two Fridays (ie February 22 and March 1).
The 15-year-old courts had gradually become dilapidated until the Heritage Building Society Nanango Community Branch stepped in to help.
The branch gave the sssociation a $51,000 grant last August at its annual Community Grants awards to upgrade the courts.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Heritage for their help with this,” Sheryl said.
“The new courts have a much better surface. They’re also safer and easier to walk on, and they’ve really helped to modernise our complex.”
The association plans to hold an official opening ceremony in March to formally recognise the Heritage Building Society’s assistance.
