Kingaroy’s Emergency Services Cadet program, axed last year by the State Government, has been saved by the St John Ambulance.

After efforts by the South Burnett Regional Council, individual councillors and the community to find the cadets a new home, the volunteers have now enrolled with the newly formed St John (Qld) Kingaroy Combined Division.

The Division offers adults (over the age of 18) and cadets (aged 8-17 years) the opportunity to learn new skills, assist the community at local events and disasters as well as keep the cadet spirit alive.

Acting Divisional Manager Naomi Beutel said the support from the community had been overwhelming.

“We were very sad to hear that funding had been cut to the Emergency Services Cadet program so we began looking for an alternative source, which is how we found St John,” she said.

“The vision, training and community spirit of St John aligned well with Emergency Services Cadet ideals, so the transition has been easy for members.

“Until now, St John did not have a presence in South Burnett, so we are proud to create this new First Aid Services Division.”

There are more than 1300 First Aid Services volunteers throughout Queensland who receive nationally accredited training ranging from Apply First Aid to Advanced Responder right through to Remote First Aid and Mental Health First Aid.

“Volunteers can choose how much training they obtain, and will receive hands-on experience at local events and disasters across the South Burnett,” she said.

“The program is especially beneficial for children as it offers them a great opportunity to do extra-curricular activities which looks great on any resume and could one day save the life of their family or friend,” she said.

The Kingaroy Combined Division already has more than 15 adult members and over 20 cadet members.

Members meet every Monday at 6:30pm (cadets during school terms only).

Meetings are held at the Kingaroy SES Headquarters at 5 Glendon Street, Kingaroy.

UPDATE January 25, 2013: The St John Cadets will be meeting at the South Burnett Enterprise Centre in 6 Cornish Street, Kingaroy, not the SES Shed as originally stated, until a final meeting place is confirmed.
