South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann confirmed today that he would be meeting with representatives of South Burnett CTC and the current Emergency Services cadet unit soon to work out how the unit can continue to function.

This follows the cancellation of the State-wide cadet program by the State Government as part of Budget cost-cutting measures.

The closure affected 39 active units throughout Queensland, including the South Burnett unit, based in Kingaroy, which has 28 cadets supported by 10 volunteer trainers.

Cr Kratzmann said South Burnett CTC had made an undertaking to support the running costs, which is about $3000 a year.

“There will also be a small amount of insurance involved, too,” Cr Kratzmann said.

The logistics of the program will also have to worked out, especially what the new group would be called.

Cr Kratzmann said he would like to keep the name ‘cadet unit’ but it would have to be made clear that it won’t be linked to the former State program.
