The Burnett District Pest Management Group (BDPMG) has launched an annual award to recognise a South Burnett landholder or community member for their efforts toward enhancing pest management awareness and activities.

Similar awards will also be presented in the Bundaberg and North Burnett council areas.

The BDPMG is a working group made up of pest management officers from the three Local Government Areas and various State Government agencies.

Its main aim is to deliver accurate and up-to-date training and advice to Local Government pest management officers, landholders and State agencies tackling issues associated with controlling pest plants and animals in the Burnett Catchment.

The new award is being sponsored by Dow Agro Science.

Nominees will be assessed on one of the following criteria:

  • Innovation – use of technology, innovation and best practice treatment methods to achieve successful pest management outcomes
  • Proactivity – displayed oustanding leadership and ongoing efforts in the area of pest management
  • Community involvement – works with the community to raise awareness and encourage participation in co-ordinated pest management programs
  • Pest Management Program – has developed an implemented an effective pest management program on their property
  • Education – undertakes a proactive role to foster awareness of threats caused by pest plants and animals including working with community groups, schools or education facilities.

The winner will receive two nights accommodation for two people at Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island, including return barge fees, buffet breakfast and a  tour of the island.

Nominations close on January 23.
