Well-known Toowoomba businessman Terry Kronk was killed this morning when his P-51 Mustang crashed near Helidon.
Mr Kronk – who is well-known to the South Burnett aviation community – had just taken off from an airstrip beside the Emu Gully Adventure Education Centre in his silver replica P-51.
Witnesses said they saw the plane plunge into trees and explode about 9:45am after an apparent engine failure on take-off.
A man taking part in a first aid course at the centre rushed to Mr Kronk’s aid but was unable to save him.
The man, in his 30s, was later hospitalised for minor burns to his legs and smoke inhalation.
The crash also sparked a large grass fire which was brought under control by 11:00am.
Mr Kronk had been intending to take part in Toowoomba Aerodrome’s centenary celebrations today, where a number of vintage aircraft were on display.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, aged 16 and 18.
