The Wide Bay Regional Organisation Of Councils – an umbrella organisation which includes the South Burnett, Cherbourg and Gympie councils – believes the region is “well-placed” to assist with the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
“The Wide Bay Burnett region is well-placed to partner with the State Government to deliver a successful 2018 Commonwealth Games … given our diverse and high standard regional sporting facilities/services/accommodation and idyllic climate,” WBBROC chairman Cr Ron Dyne said today.
WBBROC consists of six Councils in the Wide Bay Burnett Region.
“The Mayors across this region recognise that in the lead up to the 11 days of competition international teams will require the ability to acclimatise and train within an appropriate travelling distance of the Gold Coast,” Cr Dyne said.
“As with the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Wide Bay Burnett region is ideally placed to accommodate these international sporting individuals and teams and offers one of the most equable climates in the world.
“The region has in place high-class sporting facilities, venues and accommodation for international teams to use in the lead up to and during the games.”
Cr Dyne said WBBROC was “very keen” to assist the State Government to deliver on their vision for the “Four Pillar economy” and had recently written to the Premier offering their support to conduct a world-class Commonwealth Games in a relaxed and friendly State.
“On behalf of the Mayors across the region, I am keen to discuss our vision with the State Government and how it can build on the foundations for economic growth that the government has begun.”
