Greens spokesman Grant Newson has begun an online petition to put pressure on the State Government not to approve the sale of a portion of Adermann Park in Kingaroy.
St John’s Lutheran School has applied to the State Government – as owners of the land – to purchase about one-third of the park in Ivy Street to allow for expansion of the school.
Mr Newson said the school should purchase land elsewhere for their plans to accommodate Years 7-9 and allow for future expansion to Years 10-12 when required.
“This park is for the use of residents within the Shire. The sale of public assets has to stop before we have nothing left for future generations,” he said.
When southburnett.com.au logged in this morning the petition, which had been live for less than 24 hours, already had seven signatures and had been shared several times on Facebook and Twitter.
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines has asked South Burnett Regional Council to prepare a land management plan before it decides whether or not to approve the sale.
The preparation of this plan will require community consultation.
Mayor Cr Wayne Kratzmann said this week that Council was always aware that at some stage a consultation process would need to be undertaken.
“It would have been presumptuous to have embarked on this without knowing what the State Government would determine,” he said.
General Manager for Planning and Environment Stan Taylor said the community consultation process would be advertised publicly in the near future.
“Once all of the components required in the draft Plan of Management are completed then it will be forwarded to the State Government for their decision,” he said.
