The South Burnett’s cricket season roared into action at the weekend with a victory in the opening Goodchild Shield match and a round of T20 matches played at Murgon, Wondai and Kingaroy.

Only four teams are taking part in the local A Grade comp this year: Warriors, Kingaroy RSL, Murgon Crusaders and Nanango.

The semi-finals of the short-form game will be played on October 19.

Round 1 of the regular season will begin on October 20.

The South Burnett XI defeated Fraser Coast in the opening Goodchild Shield match played at Maryborough on Sunday.

Fraser Coast batted first but were dismissed for 189 in the 45th over. Top scorers were Paul Sanders 48, Scott Willing 26, and Jason Riley 20 n/o.

Best bowlers for the South Burnett were Brendan Wiel 3/34 off 8 overs, Tavis Hartwig  2/34 (7 overs) and Jon Alexander 2/25 (5 overs).

In reply, the South Burnett only took 43 overs to overhaul Fraser Coast’s score.

South Burnett finished with 5/191.

Top scorers were Jason Webber 54, Damien Sippel 31, and Ashley Sippel 30 n/o.

The prestigious Goodchild Shield is contested by four A Grade teams: South Burnett, Fraser Coast, Gympie and Bundaberg.

South Burnett’s next Goodchild Shield match will be against Bundaberg in Bundaberg on November 25.
