Hervey Bay driver Josh Arthur – and a string of bad luck – upset Tim Atkin’s hope at Kingaroy Speedway on Sunday night of becoming the first driver to take out the Queensland Street Sedan title four times in a row.
Atkin, from Gympie, and junior title holder Brody Thomsen, from Tinana, were competing for the lead at the midway mark of the 40-lap final when Thomsen hit the wall, blew a tyre and span, colliding with Atkin.
After the restart, Atkin resumed in the lead before backmarker Kristian Walker rolled in front of him … again leaving Atkin with nowhere to go.
This time Atkin’s Commodore suffered heavy damage and was off the pace, eventually allowing Arthur to get by.
Atkin, wrestling with his damaged vehicle, never gave up but finished the race in fifth place.
Arthur fought off strong competition to greet the chequered flag in first spot and take the Keith Harm Memorial Trophy.
Earlier in the night, Gavin Fletcher set a new Kingaroy lap record of 15.689 seconds in the Modified Productions, lowering the old mark by 0.751 seconds.
