A near-capacity crowd of 242 South Burnett senior citizens packed the Wondai Town Hall today to celebrate Senior’s Day – the high point of Seniors Week, which runs from August 18-26.

Members of senior citizens clubs in Yarraman, Nanango, Kingaroy, Proston, Murgon, Gayndah, Goomeri and Kilkivan travelled to Wondai for a day of fun and fellowship, capped by a roast chicken or roast beef lunch that was rounded out with an apple crumble and custard dessert.

The Wondai Senior Citizens Club was this year’s host club for the annual event, which President Graham Beuck described as “absolutely wonderful”.

As host, the Wondai club organised the venue, the catering and the day’s entertainment, as well as the morning and afternoon teas.

The day itself was made possible by a $1500 donation from Stanwell Corporation.

Mr Beuck said that this donation – as well as many others the Club had received from 35 other South Burnett businesses – allowed them to lower the cost of the day’s lunch from $18 to $12, as well as provide a great range of prizes in the mega-draw raffle.

“Stanwell was a really fantastic help,” Mr Beuck said. “They’ve been long-time supporters of Seniors Day and we wouldn’t be able to do it at the price without their assistance.”

Mr Beuck also had kind words for SBRC Mayor Wayne Kratzmann and the South Burnett Regional Council.

“After we approached them they agreed to waive the Town Hall hire costs. And then some Council workers came along in the morning to set up all the tables and chairs for us,” he said.

“They’ll also be coming back tomorrow to put them away again. We can’t praise them highly enough for this. All we had to do was set up the tables in the morning and clean up afterwards.”

Several special guests also came along to share in the festivities, including Crs Kathy Duff, Cheryl Dalton and Damien Tessmann (“we made him a chocolate cake because we know he’s partial to it,” Mr Beuck said).

Next year the host club will be Kingaroy.

Sponsors of this year’s Seniors Day at Wondai were Stanwell Corporation (major sponsor), the South Burnett Regional Council, Wondai Hardware, Wondai Pharmacy, Sakina’s Saleyards Cafe, Airds Home Timber & Hardware, Orchy’s Fresh Fruit Shop, Nanango Jewellers, Coppards Menswear, The Lavender Shop, The Peanut Van, Kingaroy RSL, Mobbs Mitre 10, Flowers & Gifts, Pursers Coaches, South Burnett Beverages, Wondai Post Office, Wondai IGA Supermarket, Kingaroy Garden Centre, Wondai Diggers Club, Ryan’s Butchery, Visual Image Hair Salon, South Burnett Veterinary Surgery, Cooks Bakery, Nanango Foodworks, Kingaroy Home Aids & Health Equipment, Loot Homewares, Options Gifts, Thorp’s Showcase Jewellers, Mark Smith’s Menswear, Top Of The Town Meat Hall, Murgon News, Dimities Cottage, Wondai Lions Club, Blooms The Chemist and Murgon Bakery.
