The tiny Blackbutt Bakery has taken out first and second place for Speciality Pies in the annual Queensland Baking Trade Show and Competition held this week at Victoria Park in Brisbane.

The bakery, owned by Roberta Anson and Jim Roberts, competed against more than 100 bakeries – including many much larger – to take out the top two prizes.

Roberta told southburnett.com.au today she was stunned to have won the Champion Queensland Speciality pie award.

But as the winners were only announced today, she is not sure which entry took out the top gong.

The couple has owned the bakery for two years and have gone from success to success.

Last year they entered the Great Aussie Pie Competition, a national competition held in Sydney.

In this prestigious event they took out a gold for their curry pie, silver medals for their vegetarian, pepper steak and butter chicken pies, and a bronze for their mince pie.

Roberta said the secret of their success was that everything was made from scratch, using all natural ingredients. No pre-made bakery products were used or “packet stuff”.

“That’s what people want, old-fashioned home cooking,” she said.

The recipe is definitely working,

“We rely on word-of-mouth for our advertising and it’s phenomenal how busy we are,” she said.

As well as hand-made pies, the store also has speciality breads, hand-made fudges, truffles and chocolates as well as a range of gourmet coffees.
