The Cherbourg Hornets, obviously stung into action after their defeat by Kingaroy last week, re-stamped their dominance on the Premier League A Grade competition by storming home to a 78-0 victory over Wondai on Saturday.
Nigel Williams scored an amazing seven tries for the Hornets with the home side unable to stop his powerful runs to the line.
Midway through the first half, Cherbourg were ahead 16-0 (two tries to Williams and one to Danny Cobbo) but Wondai still looked to be in the game.
But then the Hornets changed gear …
Gerard Prior and Justin Prior – and Nigel Williams again – all scored in quick succession (and there was another attempted try called back because of a forward pass). The half-time score was 34-0.
The second half saw a procession of Hornets’ tries: Trevor Davidson, Nathan Gadd, Nigel Williams (four more tries), Peter Carlo (two tries) and Carl Aubrey.
To their credit, the Wolves never stopped trying and went close to scoring on at least four occasions in the second half, just falling at the last hurdle due to strong pressure from Cherbourg.
Mid-way through, a scrum win set up Wondai for a strong run to the line, but Cherbourg’s defence held.
Ten minutes later, Wondai attacked again, but their attempted grubber was safely fielded by the Hornets.
With nine minutes to go, a Wondai intercept turned the Hornets around and lifted the hopes of the home crowd, but again the Wolves failed to get the ball over the line.
Cherbourg shared the kicking duties about: Robert Miller, 3 goals, Carl Aubrey 2, Edward Aubrey 2, Peter Carlo 1, and Trevor Davidson 1.
The final score was 78-0.

The Kingaroy Red Ants proved too strong for Murgon in the local derby Bundaberg Rugby League U18s match played in Kingaroy on Saturday afternoon.
The game started evenly enough with tries apiece, to Jake Bucholz (Kingaroy) and Lyndon Hopkins (Murgon), in the opening minutes but Kingaroy quickly stamped its authority on the game.
Chris Ostwald starred for the Red Ants, scoring four tries. Bucholz and Jack Schaffer both scored doubles. Other point scorers were Richard Ryan (one try) and Scott Evans (five conversions).
For the Mustangs, Arthur Saltner, Lyndon Hopkins and Thomas McDowell scored tries; Hopkins kicked two goals and Andrew Scales, one goal.
Final score was Kingaroy 46, Murgon 18.
This week was the last round of regular fixtures before the semi-finals. On the top of the table is Eastern Suburbs (22 points) ahead of Across The Waves (21). Kingaroy is in third place (17 points), just ahead of Hervey Bay (also 17) on for/against. Murgon finished in fifth spot with 12 points, ahead of Wallaroos (11) and Western Suburbs (2).
Next weekend Kingaroy will play Eastern Suburbs in the u18s major semi-final. Hervey Bay will face Murgon in a sudden-death semi.
