South Burnett motorists have been urged to keep an eye out for teams of cyclists who will be competing on local roads over the weekend.

Round 4 of Cycling Queensland’s 2012 Queensland Road Team Series will be held in two stages on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s stage will start at noon at the Maidenwell Hotel.

Sixteen teams of six riders will complete three laps of a 37km circuit which takes in the Kingaroy-Cooyar and Brooklands-Pimpimbudgee roads.

Organisers say the Maidenwell Hotel would be an ideal location to catch the riders each time they cross under the banner for intermediate and final sprints.

Sunday’s stage will start at 11:00am at the Youth Park in Somerset Street, Kingaroy.

The riders will complete four laps of a 36km course that includes Somerset Street, Harris Road, Kingaroy-Barkers Creek Road, North Branch Road, Booie-Crawford Road, Bunya Highway, Taylors Road, Schellbacks Road, Fisher Street and Alford Street.

The CTC Youth Centre in Somerset Street would be an ideal vantage point as the riders will sprint each time they cross the under the finish banner.

Hot food will also be available courtesy of the Kingaroy Lions Club.

Race spokeswoman Wendy Sanders said the series was for amateur cyclists aged 19 and above. Some of these cyclists could be the professionals of the future, including potential Olympians and Tour de France competitors.

No roads will be closed for the race however police and SES will be supervising to help keep both riders and motorists safe.

This is the second year that a round of the Queensland Road Teams series has been held in the South Burnett, however last year’s event was just one day.

The extension to a two-day event should provide a boost to the local economy with competitors and their support staff staying overnight in the region.
