BIEDO Sport and Recreation Co-ordinator Nicole O'Brien

July 31, 2012

The Burnett Inland Economic Development Organisation (BIEDO) has appointed a Sport and Recreation Co-ordinator to help South Burnett sporting clubs sort out some of their most common headaches: volunteers, fundraising, facilities and conflict resolution.

The new co-ordinator, Nicole O’Brien said her aim was to help sporting groups work through all the things that make the group tick to “ensure they are around for the long haul”.

She will work with an initial cluster of groups to help them function more effectively and access services, resources or the expertise needed to enable them to achieve their priorities.

“Creating happy, harmonious groups that function well within themselves, are valued within the community and that are viable into the future is the goal,” BIEDO CEO Linda Silburn said.

“But don’t expect to see Nicole running onto a field with a whistle anytime soon!

“The technical side of the sport or recreation is not dealt with by the co-ordinator and they are not responsible for tasks undertaken by coaches or committee members.

“BIEDO is committed to building the capacity of local sporting and recreational groups and with the role being funded for three years, it is not a ‘fly-in, fly-out’ service.”

Co-ordinators have also been appointed to the Central and North Burnett regions.

Ms Silburn said the initial cluster of groups had already been selected, however any interested sporting or recreational organisations can register to go on a shortlist.

Once registered, they will also then be invited to attend relevant workshops and events.
