The first public meeting of the fledgling group aiming to get a local Aussie Rules team into the Darling Downs competition in 2013 attracted a small crowd of supporters to the Kingaroy Cricket Club this week.

There were parents and children interested in a junior competition as well as seniors who had experience playing with the South Burnett’s last AFL team, the Kingaroy Bulldogs.

AFL Darling Downs representatives Christopher Davis and Keith Webb explained the process that would have to be followed to allow the South Burnett to field a team in the competition.

One of the local residents pushing to form the team, Will Reid, told southburnett.com.au the next step would be holding an Annual General Meeting however the group was moving slowly as it “didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves”.

“The meeting tonight is to gauge interest from the community in having a team,” he said.

An Aussie Rules team from Chinchilla is also under development and could join the Darling Downs competition at the same time as the South Burnett.
