Cherbourg’s Ration Shed Museum hosted a very busy Open Day on Tuesday as part of the town’s annual NAIDOC celebrations.

Visitors had the opportunity to inspect the newly opened Timeline exhibit as well as enjoy hot food, live music and traditional dancing.

Historic films and slides attracted an audience in the Old Dormitory and there were heaps of activities for the children on the lawn behind the complex.

Local artist, Peter Carlo, was kept busy offering hands-on art classes to local children.

The winners of the NAIDOC Art Competition, which had the theme “We Are Many, But We Are One”, were also announced.

Cherbourg resident Jennifer Hart won the senior prize for her work which depicted hands of different colours coming together as one.

The entries in this competition, and other works by the Yidding artists group, were displayed in the old CWA shed which is undergoing renovations to become a dedicated gallery space which will be officially opened later this year.

Artist Peter Carlo’s art workshops proved very popular with the heaps of kids trying their hand at traditional painting; Peter’s works are being featured this month at the Wondai Art Gallery
