There’s a big celebration day coming up in the South Burnett – Saturday, May 12 – the 90th birthday of the annual Burrandowan Picnic Races.
The Picnic Race committee is hoping that the many people who have enjoyed the Burrandowan Races over the years will come back and share their memories trackside and help to create new memories for generations to come.
“We know there are many people who met their partner at Burrandowan, so we would love to see them come back and celebrate with us. And there are others who may not have been for many years, and we would love them to join us too,” said Burrandowan Picnic Race Club president Brendan McCormack.
Mr McCormack said Burrandowan also attracts “fashionistas” from all over south-east Queensland who enjoy competing in the Fashions on the Field.
“For our community, this is the event of the year. We work to prepare the grounds and organise the event, then dress up and join our friends for a great day out,” he said.
Racing will kick off at 1:00pm however locals usually arrive much earlier. The traditional clay target shoot will start at 9:00am.
There’ll also be a pit-fired barbecue at night and a fully licensed bar operating throughout the event.
The annual race meeting pumps about $10,000 into the local community.
This year’s fund-raising will assist the the Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as well-known country jockey Kristy Banks who was paralysed in a race fall at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve.
