The 1st Division match between Wests and Nanango on Saturday evening was the game everyone was waiting for … and the two sides did not disappoint.

Wests snatched an early goal through Brendan Smith in only the second minute of the game.

Three minutes later Nanango were awarded a penalty which was converted by Kieran Mangan to make it 1-1. Only a minute later Wests got a second through Jack Fleming who finished off a fine goal after a strong run from the right wing.

The rest of the half was a fierce tussle with both sides having only a few clear chances on goal. Just on half-time Kieran Mangan latched on to a through ball to make it level at 2-2 at half-time.

The second half started off at an extraordinary pace with both teams playing like it was a grand final.

In the 72nd minute, Wests were awarded a corner and it was Marty Perrett who latched onto it to give Wests a 3-2 lead.

Not long after that, Wests defender Jamie Neil came from the field with a suspected broken collar bone. However both sides never let up and in the fourth minute of injury time it was Chris Walters who got the equaliser from a well worked move.

This was one of the most exciting games in the competition for quite some time. Both teams ran themselves ragged and 3-3 seemed to be a deserving result.

Best on the park for Nanango were Kieran Mangan for Nanango and Marty Perrett for Wests.

In the Women’s game, Wests defeated Nanango 3-2 in an exciting encounter.

Nanango went out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Kerri Thompson and Cassie Kelly. In a 20-minute spell just after half-time Wests put together some champagne football to bring it back to 2-2 with an own goal and a fine individual effort from Reneau McBride.

With about 10 minutes to go, the Wests’ women pressed forward and were rewarded for some fine play with Michelle Hunter hitting in the winner. Wests
