Army cadets from Murrumba Downs and Logan joined comrades from Nanango at a special bivouac weekend at Nanango State High School at the weekend.

The khaki and camouflage-clad young people tried their hands at damper making, built a rope and pole bridge, practised detecting “mines” in a minefield and generally enjoyed doing all things military.

11 ACU from Logan also brought along its band to provide a musical touch to the weekend.

The only weapons in sight were replicas, except for the archery area where cadets were making short work of the targets with long bows.

Major (AAC) Trevor Schultz, from Brisbane, said archery had been introduced into the cadet program six years ago.

Since then about 12,000 boys and girls across Australia had undergone the introduction to archery training.

The weekend also featured “team building” exercises for the cadets, including navigating an obstacle course while blindfolded, and first aid training.
