The rodeo came to Cherbourg as part of Mental Health Week activities … and it worked, putting smiles on everyone’s faces.
The family fun evening was organised by Cherbourg Aboriginal Council on Thursday. It included music, a jumping castle, hamburgers, foot races and, of course, all the action in the rodeo ring.
The sandy ring was erected under floodlights on the grass in front of the Cherbourg Sporting Complex.
Local residents competed for cash prizes in a string of events, ranging from poddy rides to the prestigious Open Bull Ride, named in memory of Bert Button Snr who died of cancer last year.
Ring announcer Bevan Costello kept the program running smoothly as competitors took turns launching out of the four gates.
Many of the younger competitors learned their skills at the Arethusa College Rodeo School at Ficks Crossing, but there were also many “old hands” testing their reflexes again in the ring.
