Mothers Day
Today is the second Sunday in May: Mothers Day. Different countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day on different days of the year because the event has many different origins. Some say that Mothers Day first began in ancient Greece and emerged from a cult which was marked by the festival of Cybele (the mother of the gods) which was celebrated around Greece and the Greek colonies of Asia Minor, and then later in Rome. In more modern times, Mother's Day began in the USA when it was copied from England by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War as a call to unite women against war. But in the UK and Australia, the day simply celebrates motherhood and thanking our Mums. So if you'd like to give your own Mum a big "Thank You!" today, here's how you can do it:
Mothers Day Classic Fun Run & Walk - Wondai
The annual Mothers Day Classic Fun Run and Walk - a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation - will be held at Wondai today. Registrations will start behind the Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street at 8:00am and will be followed by a warm-up at 8:45am. After this, runners can set off on either an 8km walk (8:55am); a 4km run (9:00am); or a 4km walk (also starting at 9:00am) along the South Burnett Rail Trail. The Wondai Lions will be on site to serve up breakfasts, and there'll also be a multi-draw raffle. All participants are encouraged to wear pink and a fun morning out is guaranteed. Entry fees are $35 for adults, $30 for concessions and $20 for children. The Classic usually draws up to 300 participants every year, and you can read more about it and see photos of previous Classics on our website.
Mothers Day Meals - Blackbutt
The Radnor Hotel in Coulson Street, Blackbutt will be celebrating Mothers Day with a special Mothers Day Breakfast and a Mothers Day Lunch. Bookings for either sitting are advisable: (07) 4163-0203.
Mothers Day High Tea - Nanango
The Nanango Netball Association will be hosting a Mothers Day High Tea at the Nanango Golf Club on the D'Aguilar Highway north of Nanango's CBD from 1:00pm to 4:00pm this afternoon as a netball club fundraiser. Apart from a mouth-watering High Tea the event will feature boutique market stalls, a multi-draw raffle, live music, a bar with tea and coffee and prizes for the best fascinator and tea cup. Tickets are $25 for adults and children by age (eg: 5yos = $5). Spaces are limited, though, so a booking is advisable. Phone the netball club on (07) 4163-2254 or the golf club on (07) 4163-1463.
Mothers Day Lunch and Dinner - Kingaroy
Kingaroy RSL in Markwell Street, Kingaroy will be offering a special Mothers Day lunch and dinner menu today. For $35 (for a main course and dessert) or $30 (main only) Mums can choose between three mains of fish, chicken or beef and two desserts. Bookings are advisable, though: (07) 4162-1755.
Mothers Day Breakfast - Nanango
The Nanango Services Club in George Street, Nanango will be hosting a Mothers Day Breakfast from 8:00am to 10:30am this morning. The menu offers six mouth-watering courses ranging in price from $6 (for a ham and cheese or ham, cheese and tomato croissant) to $23.90 for a b-i-g brekky, and bookings may be advisable: (07) 4163-1375.
Mother's Day Cacao Ceremony - Wondai
Dragonfly Heart Studio at 76 Mackenzie Street in Wondai will be running a Mothers Day Cacao Ceremony) and Sound Bath from 3:30pm to around 5:00pm this afternoon for a truly different way to celebrate Mothers Day. Tickets are $30 per head and bookings are essential: phone Angel on 0431-673-161.
Mother's Day Buffet Lunch - Murgon
The Royal Hotel at the corner of Lamb and Gore Streets in Murgon will be running a Mothers Day Buffet and Dessert Lunch from 11:00am to around 3:00pm today. For $35 guests will be treated to champagne on arrival and can assemble their own lunch and dessert from the buffet. However, places are limited so a booking is essential: (07) 4168-1799.
Mothers Day Special Menu - Murgon
In addition to its normal menu, the Murgon Services Club in Gore Street, Murgon will be offering a special Mothers Day Menu today, offering a choice of two mains (grilled salmon or chicken breast in white wine sauce) and two desserts (caramel tart or Banofee pavlova) for $35 per head. Mothers Day Lunch - Goomeri
Joe's Grand Hotel in Boonara Street, Goomeri will be running a Mothers Day Lunch from 11:30am to 3:30pm today. The lunch is being prepared by Joe's catering team and they promise something really special. However, places are limited so a booking is probably advisable: (07) 4168-4131
Mothers Day Lunch - Kingaroy
Kingsley Grove Estate on Stuart Valley Drive south-west of Kingaroy will be hosting a Mothers Day Lunch from 11:00am to 3:00pm today. For $40 per adult (or $25 for children), mothers will be greeted with a free glass of wine, followed by wood-fired pizza and a Mothers Day platter. However, places are limited so a booking is essential and they can be made online
Mothers Day Lunch - Wondai
The Cecil Hotel in Mackenzie Street, Wondai will be running a special Mothers Day Lunch from 12:00 noon to 3:00pm today, offering two course mains and desserts to suit all tastes (even a gluten-free option!). Guests will be greeted with a champagne cocktail on arrival (or soft drink if you prefer) and there'll be live entertainment from Jarrod Edwards too. Mothers Day Lunch - Nanango
The Fitzroy Hotel in Fitzroy Street, Nanango will be running a Mothers Day Lunch from 11:00am to 2:00pm today, offering a choice of two entrees, two mains and two desserts for $35 (two courses) or $40 (three courses). Bookings are advisable: (07) 4163-1506.
Murgon CBD Markets
The monthly Murgon Markets will be held in Lamb Street in the heart of Murgon from 7:00am until about 12:00 noon today. The markets run on the second Sunday of each month and offer locally made crafts, foods and produce - always an interesting Sunday morning out. New stallholders are always welcome too! More details? Timbertowns Woodworkers - Blackbutt
The Timbertowns Woodworkers group will be holding their regular Sunday morning meeting at the Blackbutt Showgrounds in Bowman Road, Blackbutt from 8:30am until around 12:00 noon today.
