A Murgon resident has begun an official e-Petition to the State Government requesting tighter residential restrictions on reportable sex offenders.
The petition, by Jessica Maier, calls for current laws to be reviewed to determine whether stronger residential restrictions for reportable child sex offenders near schools, childcare centres, playgrounds, public swimming pools, sporting facilities and other child-focused infrastructure are warranted.
It requests the State Government to:
- Review Queensland legislation governing reportable child sex offenders
- Investigate legislated residential exclusion zones around child-focused infrastructure
- Consider stronger monitoring and supervision measures where appropriate
- Consult with Queensland Police, child protection agencies, victim advocacy organisations, local governments and community stakeholders
- Report to the Legislative Assembly on options for strengthening child protection laws consistent with existing legal and human rights obligations
The petition comes in the wake of several street meetings in Murgon, promoted by an anonymous Facebook group, in June which aimed to raise awareness about sex offenders allegedly living in the area.
