The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has secured a $751.3 million, five-year training agreement with the Federal Government which could expand access to GPs in rural areas.
This is the largest and longest training agreement ever awarded to a medical college.
RACGP president Dr Michael Wright said the contract reflected government confidence in the RACGP’s ability to deliver GP training nationwide.
In 2026, 1772 future GPs will take part in the training program.
Of these, 841 will spend all three years of their training in regional, rural or remote communities and 293 will train as Rural Generalists, gaining an extra year of skills in emergency medicine and hospital care for rural communities.
