Western Downs Regional Council will begin an animal inspection program in the Bell region from February 1.
Council rangers will be visiting properties to ensure dog owners are complying with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 which requires pets to be registered and microchipped.
The rangers will also be checking that owners are maintaining suitable, secure enclosures for their animals.
Deputy Mayor Kylie Bourne said the program aimed at reducing dog attacks, roaming animals and pet impoundments.
WDRC dog registrations expire on July 31 regardless of the month a dog is registered; however pro-rata discounts do apply.
