Battery energy storage systems (BESS) developments have joined the list of renewable energy projects which are now “impact assessable” in Queensland.

The latest changes by the State Government, which join similar legislation for solar and wind farms, aim to give communities and councils a stronger voice in decision-making.

Under the “Planning (Battery Storage Facilities) and Other Legislation Amendment Regulation 2025”, large stand-alone BESS projects of 50MW or more must now undertake a social impact assessment and agree with the local government on community benefits before lodging a development application.

They will also be impact assessable, meaning mandatory community consultation and a consistent approach to assessment.

The Local Government Association of Queensland had called for BESS projects to be included in renewable energy planning reforms.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the changes were about fairness, safety and ensuring communities had confidence in the planning process.

The new changes took effect on Friday (December 12).
