Year 12 student Darryl Gyemore says he felt honoured to represent his community while studying at Saint Mary’s Catholic College in Kingaroy.

Darryl was recently presented with the Brisbane Catholic Education Spirit Of Sport Award and the Aunty Daisy Carlo Deadly Award at the school’s annual awards ceremony

“My education journey at Saint Mary’s has been full of moments that fill me with pride,” Darryl said.

“The feeling of being up on stage accepting these awards made me feel truly connected to and appreciated by my college community.

“In my senior year, I also found enjoyment in the opportunity to read the Welcome to Country at school assemblies.

“I feel honoured to represent my people, while it also makes me feel proud of myself as I continue to work to overcome my fear of public speaking.

“Some of the best memories I have from my time at Saint Mary’s have been the extra opportunities that are on offer.

“Some of my highlights include sports carnivals, camps, excursions and retreats.

“My time at Saint Mary’s has also taught me the importance of getting involved and getting along with others.

“Rather than just sitting on the sidelines, I have learnt that teamwork is the foundation for success.

“Looking ahead, I hope that younger students can look up to me and say I want to be like that guy one day. Someone who works alongside others, makes a difference to the world around them and gives back to others in meaningful ways.”
