Commemorations were held in towns and villages around the South Burnett on Tuesday to mark the 107th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I.
A minute’s silence was held at 11:00am to remember the more than 60,000 Australians who lost their lives in the Great War, as well as the thousands who have died in the many conflicts – including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq – and peace-keeping missions in which Australia has been involved since 1918.
Wreaths were laid at monuments, flags lowered and prayers said.
Attorney-General and Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Nanango memorial while in Kingaroy, a small service featured a speech by guest Lieutenant David Upton RAN from Borneo Barracks at Toowoomba.
Lt Upton reminded the gathered crowd that Armistice Day was renamed to Remembrance Day in 1977 to widen the focus from World War I to commemorate all those who had served in any war or conflict.
The Kingaroy commemoration also included a short march by veterans, a moving performance of “Amazing Grace” by Sue Dowideit-Reiger and the National Anthem sung by Kingaroy State High School students in English and Wakka Wakka.

Murgon Commemoration
A pair of camels were the unusual guests at Murgon’s Remembrance Day commemoration.
Penny and Vernon are the mascots of 26 Transport Squadron, based at Amberley.
Members of the squadron supported the Murgon service, and the Murgon RSL Citizen’s Auxiliary supported the camels by providing them with hay!
